Every great journey begins with a single step, and for Haidong Gumdo in Europe, that step was taken by Master Han Sang Hyun. With unwavering determination and a vision that reached far beyond borders, he carried the Korean art of the sword from its homeland into Europe, beginning in Portugal in 1999. What began with only a few students soon grew into a movement that now unites dojangs and practitioners in more than 19 countries. Through countless seminars, demonstrations, and championships, Master Han not only introduced Haidong Gumdo to Europe, but also built a community bound by respect, discipline, and the spirit of the sword. As the European Head Master, his guidance has shaped generations of instructors and students, ensuring that Haidong Gumdo in Europe is not just a martial art, but a living legacy. His vision continues to inspire us today: that the sword is more than a weapon ,it is a path to strength, unity, and character.

From the very first steps in Portugal, the art began a journey that now unites Europe under the spirit of the sword.

In 2000, Europe witnessed the first steps of Haidong Gumdo when Master Han arrived in Lisbon, Portugal. With nothing more than determination and a full heart, he began teaching small groups, often facing rain, language barriers, and cultural differences. Despite the hardships, Portugal became the birthplace of Haidong Gumdo in Europe—a seed planted with courage and vision.

From Portugal, the flame of Haidong Gumdo spread across the continent. Classes began in the UK and France, then moved further into Spain and Germany. Each country brought new challenges and new friendships, with demonstrations, training camps, and cultural exchanges lighting the way. Step by step, the art gained recognition, and the European flame began to burn brightly.

The early years were difficult—classes were small, and acceptance was uncertain. Yet the persistence of instructors and the unwavering belief in the sword’s spirit overcame every obstacle. Slowly but surely, more students joined, more dojangs opened, and Haidong Gumdo became a martial art of respect and discipline known across borders.

Celebrating the European Journey of Haidong Gumdo — Born in Portugal, Returning to Portugal

Twenty-five years ago, the first steps of Haidong Gumdo in Europe began in Portugal. What started as a small spark quickly grew into a continent-wide journey, carried forward by masters, instructors, and students who dedicated themselves to the way of the sword.

From those early days in Portugal, Haidong Gumdo spread across Europe, inspiring countless practitioners and building a strong network of dojangs, championships, and cultural exchanges. The art of the sword became more than just training — it became a brotherhood, a tradition, and a living legacy.

Now, in October 2025, we return to the very place where it all began — Portugal — to honor this historic milestone. The 25th Anniversary Event will bring together masters and students from across Europe and beyond for four days of seminars, demonstrations, competitions, and celebration.

This is not only a tribute to the past 25 years, but also the beginning of the next chapter — a moment to stand together, to celebrate our history, and to shape the future of Haidong Gumdo in Europe and the world.
